Thoughts on Competition
Competition seeks superiority over others. People who like to prove themselves better usually see life with hostility and think of the other as an enemy. Defeat comes to people whose lives revolve around superiority, because their victory is temporary. Anything embedded in time has to pass, good or bad. Victory or defeat.
You Are Not Your Startup
Startups navigate constantly on the edge of both extremes, success and failure. A big mistake I’ve made is treating the successes and failures of my startup as a reflection of my own self-worth. When things go great I feel great, when things go wrong I feel like shit. Keep your mind healthy and pour your heart in. Don’t let the current status of your business dictate how you feel or what you are worth.
Invest in Sleeping
Founder burnout is the most serious threat to a startup. Protect yourself from burnout like you would protect your servers, database or premises from hackers or burglars. The ROI of good sleeping is great and for that reason I think it is an investment. Good sleep brings productivity and creativity which are essential to thrive in difficult times.
Today’s Success, Tomorrow’s Failure
The tone about Grooveshark and Secret (update: and now Homejoy) shutting down sounds a lot like they failed but, did they? Grooveshark was around for almost 10 years and was a pioneer in online music streaming. Secret and Homejoy made millions of users happy for a while. Both made something people wanted, and this is something only a small percentage of startups achieve. Is Blackberry a story of failure?
